Counting this week, there are five weeks left in this school year. Wow, does time fly!
We have our track meet at UVIC tomorrow, Thursday the 26th! We will be there from 10:15-1:30 and we will cheer on all students participating. Students are to wear shorts or athletic pants, t-shirts, and running shoes (not court shoes) to school tomorrow. No uniform is required. In math, we are finishing up our unit on fractions and decimals. Right now we are learning how to add decimals to the hundredths. Please have students sign into Destination Math through the Cloverdale website to complete a decimals assignment. The assignment teaches students about decimals to the thousandths, which may be a bit of a challenge for some. Students also have a math sheet for homework (handed out today) that is due on Friday. Our last homework assignment did not go very well. Only 10 of the 25 students handed the homework in on or before the day it was due. If a student doesn't bring the completed homework assignment back on the due date, then they will be given another copy to do at recess. Thank you for your support at home with this issue. Students have been working hard on their biome projects, which are due on June 3rd. Students will be presenting their project via Powerpoint, Prezi, Book Creator, Word, poster etc. The assignment is essentially in three parts, with the first 2 parts being worth 50% of the mark. The first part is the student proving that they are an expert in the biome they are studying. The second part is the student proving they are an expert on the species or issue. The third part, and focus of the assignment, is what is the problem facing the species in their biome and what can I do about it. The students must explain what has happened over time (ex. the decline in the population of burrowing owls) and develop an action plan to help. The action plan may be to raise money or awareness, or another plan that a student has thought of and talked to a teacher and parent about. It is helpful for parents to ask students about what they are working on and be on the lookout for any current information in the newspaper, news or online. It has been a busy couple of weeks. We had Jump Rope for Heart, a visit from Science World about forces, and a day at the Public Works Day!
