It has turned to cool November weather, but I'm enjoying the sunshine today as I write this. What a pleasure it was to meet parents at the parent/teacher conferences! It is always great to connect with each other!
Here are a few highlights from our classroom: Math - Students are reviewing adding and subtracting large numbers. Grade 4 needs to find sums up to 10 000 and grade 5 up to 1 000 000. Grade 4 students have been challenging themselves with larger numbers than 10 000! Way to go! Next week we will begin multiplication and division. Grade 4 will learn to multiply 3 digits by 1 digit (324 x 3) and divide 2 digits by 1 digit, with remainder (33 divided by 2). They will also get practice, to become faster, with the multiplication facts to 10 x 10. Grade 5 will learn to multiply 3 digits by 2 digits (324 x 31) and long division (3 digits by 1 digit), with remainder. Writing - Student wrote some amazing stories at Halloween. They wrote them as a pod and had to roll a dice to determine a character and setting. I will post them on the writing page. I was so impressed with their ideas! Pod 2 was voted as the winner. Their story was very funny! Science - Grade 4 is finishing up their unit on matter with an Ipad project on changes in the states of matter. We will extend their knowledge by offering them a glimpse into the Grade 5s next science topic of Solutions and Solubility. Grade 5 has learned about the digestive system, the respiratory system, the nervous system and are in the middle of learning about the circulatory system. The skeletal system is next! Next will be Solutions and Solubility. Social Studies - Grades 4 and 5 have been learning mapping skills and about the continents and oceans of the world. Next we will be learning about how the provinces came to be, with a concentration on British Columbia. Other - Look for your students ' Positive Traits Heart'. Students chose positive traits they felt applied to them, most of the time.....nobody is perfect. We have vistors from UVIC tomorrow. They are students in their first year of education and for many, it is their first time in the classroom since they were young! Tomorrow, November 4th is Random Acts of Kindness Day!! Cheers, Mrs. G
