Getting to know our classroom has been fun. There are so many books and it is fun reading in reading nook. We all have a classroom job every week and it changes every week. If we need a break we can go to the take two chair to squeeze the emoji pillow, play with fidgets and calm down. School has been really fun so far.
It is time to end our year together. I cannot say how much all of the students mean to me. They are a fantastic bunch of people and each one is so talented in their own way. We have compassionate, caring, and giving students in our class. Some excel at math, science, art, creating, coding, helping, and I know they will all be successful in the coming school year. Thank you to parents and family for your help and support. We did it, together!! Have an amazing summer! This is our Fluor Engineering challenge that we did in March. We all did a great job working together. We are lucky to have two student teachers in our class this month. We enjoyed doing gymnastics in gym this month. We have a new seating plan in class. We are reading new books in class. We are doing track next month and will be going to the university track to compete against other schools. Our class is waiting for the praying mantis egg case (ootheca) to hatch. Let's hope it is soon. We have started our second genius hour.
February is always a busy month with so many days to recognize and celebrate. There is Lunar New Year, Groundhog Day, Valentine's Day, Random Act of Kindness Day, Pink Shirt Day, the 100th Day of School, and it was Black History Month. We have been working on basic division facts, and have started three methods of large number division: Partial Quotient, Standard Algorithm, Short Division. Grade 4 students will be able to divide 4-5 digit numbers by one digit and grade 5 will be dividing 4-5 digit numbers by two digits. In science, we are working on the Rock Cycle in class and we are studying immigration and explorers in social studies. In gym, we are finishing up a unit on pickleball. I am sure that families are looking forward to the spring break coming up. Enjoy your time off. Mrs. G. Happy New Year Everybody! I hope that your winter break was restful and you enjoyed lots of family time. The snow has been a wonderful opportunity to get outside and play! There are some challenges we are facing right now and everyone is trying their best to keep everyone healthy and safe. Thank you for staying connected to the school and the district for updates. We are all preparing for what our learning will look like both in school and at home. We will keep you apprised of any changes. I look forward to seeing students next week. Please take care and enjoy the snow! P.S. Enjoy the photos of our gingerbread houses. Also, we hope you enjoyed the winter concert video at home. We watched it at school while we enjoyed some hot chocolate and cookies. Our school is involved in piloting a provincial initiative for the 2021-2022 school year that will see all classroom teachers use Proficiency Scales to communicate student learning. A change in reporting practice can be seen across the province, as school districts work to align themselves with the Ministry of Education’s reporting policy and with BC’s curriculum. We anticipate that by the 2022-2023 school year, all schools province wide will be using the Proficiency Scales.
The move to Proficiency Scales is a shift away from using traditional letter grades: A, B, C+, C,... and/or a performance scale: Not Yet Meeting (1), Approaching Expectations (2), Meeting Expectation (3) and Exceeding Expectations (4). Why the Shift? Proficiency Scales are based on communicating and describing each student’s growth and progression along a continuum of learning. All reports will continue to reflect strengths, areas for improvement and ways to deepen learning. We all survived our first day back after lovely summer vacations!
